Getting to Drumtochty

If you look at the Picture above on the left, we are going to there the nose and whiskers are.

Buzzfeed asked Britons to detail a map of Scotland. (above)

Flying There

Some people are going to fly directly to Edinburgh, and some will be making other stops along the way. The following are directions if you are flying into Edinburgh (I don’t recommend Aberdeen, it’s very expensive).

  • A return flight to the UK, and particularly Edinburgh can cost anywhere from 600USD - 1300USD. It depends on where and when you are flying out. If you end up in Edinburgh or London early because the flights are cheaper, there is PLENTY to see and do.

  • We highly recommend you fly into Edinburgh. From there, it is easy to ride the tram into the city for about 3BP. You can take it directly to Waverley Train Station, and head up to the venue immediately, or stay somewhere and get to do some sight-seeing.

  • Waverley Train Station is like a mall, so if you need a place to rest with wi-fi, there are restaurants, pasties, and the all important Starbucks.

 Public Transit

From Aberdeen Train Station:

  • Laurencekirk is very close to Aberdeen, and the fare from one to the other is only about 5BP. Aberdeen has a rich and interesting history, and it is a modern city where big oil from the North Sea means a lot of fancy restaurants and gentrification.

 Driving

  • Renting a car is a very good way to get around Scotland freely.

  • Below is a Google map with the venue location. Google will help you navigate

  • The castle has ample parking.

  • See “What to Do” below for places to visit while in Scotland with a car!

Public Transit

From Edinburgh Waverley Train Station:

  • The train up toward Aberdeenshire is like a commuter train, no need to buy weeks in advance for availability, just check the train schedule from Waverley to Laurencekirk. Usually there are trains every 1-2 hours.

  • Buying an “advance” ticket can help save some money, but these tickets CANNOT BE CHANGED. If you aren’t absolutely sure you will make the train time you book, it isn’t worth it.

  • Fare one way is about 20BP (30USD)

  • On Tuesday, we will have shuttles picking people up to bring you to the castle.

We cannot emphasize this enough.

Please speak to Varun, Helen, of a designee of theirs about your housing assignment. You will have some choice, but because you may want to share a flat with someone you actually know, allow us to facilitate sleeping accommodations with you.

DO NOT YET BOOK DIRECTLY WITH THE VENUE, CHECK IN WITH US FIRST

One of the reasons we chose a location this far north was to make it easier for you to travel around Scotland (especially to the highlands) before or after the wedding. Scotland is a wonderful destination!

Eat & Drink

The food at the venue is really good! We particularly like their venison, which is locally sourced. The Castle has one of the largest deer herds in Scotland. You will see them on the way in!

Scotland is famous for it’s beef, whiskey, haggis, and salmon. Although vegetarians will be missing out, there are many options available to vegetarians and vegans (especially in Edinburgh).

The Speyside Whiskey Trail is both famous and nearby to Aberdeenshire. If you don’t like peaty whiskey, and you do like Scotch. This is a good place to go.

Angus Beef: Angus is literally just south of the wedding. Yum.

Play

Visit Castles, go on historical tours, attend plays in Edinburgh and music in Glasgow. Golf also exists.

Nearby Drumtochty:

  • Drum Castle

  • Dunnottar Castle (cliffs!)

  • Stonehaven Clock Tower and Town (super close! half-day of sight-seeing a quaint town that locals love and call their favorite.)

North:

  • Aberdeen (and its beaches)

  • Speyside Whiskey trail

West:

  • Balmoral Castle (in the Cairngorms)

  • Glenfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter Train)

  • Loch Ness and other Lochs.

  • The Highlands!

South:

  • Dundee and a lot of golfing.

  • Edinburgh— theatre, museums, architecture. The “Athens of the North”

  • Glasgow— music, sports, architecture… Sadly, I haven’t been.

  • England

  • Europe

Explore

Scotland’s natural beauty is its top attraction. We plan on trying to offer tours that pick people up after the wedding on Thursday and can take you up to the highlands.

Our favorite places were the in the Isle of Skye, but the Cairngorm mountains are nearby Aberdeenshire if you want an outdoors experience without too much running around.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are unique and lead up to Inverness, gateway to the North. The Outer Hebirdes (The Western Isles) are beautiful, remote, and full of whiskey.

Also as far west as Mull and as far north as Orkney and the Shetlands, there is some of the best whale watching available!

There is honestly too much to list.
